Overview
For 150 years, Albert Lortzing was the most performed composer on German stages after Mozart and Verdi. A multifaceted man of the theatre, Lortzing wrote his own libretti and followed in the tradition of Mozart and Weber while exploring diverse subjects—from romantic fairy tales to heroic calls for political freedom. His opera overtures reflect a lively imagination and masterful orchestration, moving seamlessly between imposing grandeur and lighter, exceptionally tuneful motifs. This recording provides a rare opportunity to hear these works, which are seldom found on disc outside of full opera recordings.

Interesting Facts
The "Spieloper" Pioneer: Albert Lortzing is considered the main representative of the German Spieloper, a light opera genre that grew out of the Singspiel and shares similarities with the French opéra comique.
Family Tradition: Born into a family of actors, Lortzing made his first stage appearance at age 12 and spent his life as an actor, singer, cellist, and conductor.
Wagner's Inspiration: Lortzing's opera Hans Sachs (1840) predates Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg by decades; both works share the same subject matter and even some melodic patterns.
Revolutionary Spirit: His opera Regina (1848) was the first to be set in a factory with striking workers, reflecting the revolutionary "Springtime of the Peoples" in Europe.
Cover Art: The album features the painting Undine (1872) by the famous Pre-Raphaelite artist John William Waterhouse.
